Gen 2 - Chapter 1: One is the loneliest number.

After Lily had moved out the house felt so empty, I didn't know what to do with myself. Every night after work I would come home, eat dinner by myself, then have a shower and curl up in my dressing gown and watch an old black and white romance before heading to bed. It was getting kind of boring and not to mention lonely.

The next day after work a few friends from work invited me out to the local club, how could I say no? I arranged to meet them there at nine, I went home and had a quick shower, changed into one of my best dresses, and styled my hair. I wanted to make an effort as I had not been out for a while. I was looking forward to what was hopefully going to be a great night.

When I arrived I spotted Gemma and Sara sitting at the bar chatting, I looked around and spotted Joshua popping some coins into the fruit machine. I waved at him and went to join the girls. I waited for them to finish their conversation before joining in, we chatted about our days and how life was at home. I ordered a round of drinks, sparkling white wine for Gemma, Gin and tonic for Sara, a beer for Joshua and a glass of red wine for myself. Mmmmm it felt good to unwind a little, I felt myself relaxing and enjoying the evening. I asked the girl's if they wanted to dance, and we all made our way to the dance floor. I was having so much fun, twirling and swaying.

I was twirling about in my own world when a soft velvety voice I recognised snapped me out of it "Would you mind if I had this dance?" he said.

I turned to him and my breath caught in my throat, his sapphire eyes were dazzling in the light of the club. I stood there and nodded numbly, agreeing. As he took my hand and pulled me close it felt like my whole body had turned to jelly, my stomach was doing somersaults. I only wish he knew that he had this amazing effect on my body. I wonder does he feel the same? As we danced I couldn't help but rest my head on his shoulder, it felt so good to be in his arms. He seemed to relax in mine too, it was like this was where we both belonged.

As the song was finishing I noticed we were still twirling round, lost in the moment, I whispered " Oh Jacob". I didn't think he had heard me, but he suddenly let go and cleared his throat " Ahem.....I think we should get a drink." he said. "OK" was all I could reply, confused. Why did he let go of me all of a sudden, like I had burnt him?

We joined the others at the bar, and he ordered drinks. As he passed me mine I couldn't help but notice that he wouldn't look me in the eye. Sara noticed too and leaned closer to ask what had happened. I told her her everything, she looked shocked and just smiled at me. I looked at her puzzled, and was surprised when she said that she had heard him talking to Joshua, saying that he really liked someone from work. "Maybe he was on about you. What else would make him act like that?" she said. I just shrugged my shoulders, I didn't know what to say.

I finished my drink and told Gemma that I was going to head home, I said my goodbyes and called a taxi. My taxi was on it's way so I went to wait outside by the front door, brr it was cold tonight, I hoped my taxi wouldn't be long.

As the taxi pulled up Jacob came out the club, thinking he was going home I said goodbye and that I will see him at work tomorrow. I was shocked by what he said next, "I just came out to make sure you got in the taxi OK." My face lit up with a huge smile as I replied "I will be fine thank you. I never thought you worried about me like that." I climbed in the taxi and gave the driver my address, as he pulled away I waved to Jacob and headed home.

I unlocked the front door and stepped inside I realised It was going to be another lonely night for me. I went upstairs to the bathroom to wash the make-up off my face and brush my teeth. I had changed into my pyjama's and was about to climb into bed when my mobile rang. It was probably Gemma checking to see if I got home OK. I clicked the answer button and told her I was home and about to go to sleep and that I would see her tomorrow. I said bye and turned my phone on silent so I could get some sleep.

I opened my eyes blearily, and hit the snooze button on my alarm, ten more minutes wouldn't hurt. My alarm went off for the second time, I rolled out of bed knowing that if I didn't get up now I would be late for work. I had a quick shower and got myself ready, I just managed to eat my cereal before Sara pipped, she was waiting for me outside in her car. I grabbed my bag and keys and headed out to meet her.

We chatted about last night while on the way, she told me that Jacob left just after me, and that her, Sara and Joshua didn't get home until nearly 3am. I laughed and said that I didn't know how she could stay out that late and still look as bright-eyed and beautiful as she does in the morning. I needed my beauty sleep. Work was unusally dull today, before lunch I was completing discharge summaries, which was nice as I got to sit down. Jacob walked past my station a couple of times, smiling nervously. I had a salad for lunch with Gemma and Sara in the cafe. I scraped my leftovers into the bin and placed my tray onto the rack, and headed back to work. My afternoon assignment was medication round, and before long it was time to head home.

I stopped at the shop on the way and bought some sushi for dinner. It tasted wonderful, I would have to try and make some myself one day, I'm sure mum left the recipe around here somewhere. I had a nice relaxing bubble bath and made some cocoa, and settled on the sofa for another evening of romance.

I felt my eyes grow heavy half way through the film, so I shut off the TV, locked the door and headed off to bed. Just as I was drifting off I heard the doorbell, I looked at the clock and saw that it 12:10am, I wonder who it could be this time of the night. I pulled on my dressing gown and headed downstairs, I answered the door and smiled.......
